Brown government promises return to poor house

Louise from Socialist Unity blog points out that the welfare state is essentially going to be abolished, stringent new conditions are going to be used by James Purnell to begin what will effectively be the end of 'jobs seekers allowance', 2million on the dole by Christmas, 3 million by next summer...benefit cuts, sounds like they will have to read all our emails and establish para military policing to repress the food rioters.

By the way even if the Tories win James Purnell could still continue in government.

Following on from the SSAC wanting your views on Purnell’s latest punitive benefit sanctions proposals, the DWP want to hear your views on the Green Paper, No one written off: reforming welfare to reward responsibility. The consultation period runs until the 22nd october 2008. The following link includes details of where to write along with further information about the consultation period and the Green Paper.

The consultation period began on the 21 July 2008 and runs until 22 October 2008. Please ensure your response reaches the DWP by that date.

The Green Paper includes more conditionality, stricter rules, compulsion and sanctions. And of course, community work if you have been unemployed for 2 years. And this process actually criminalises the unemployed, the languages blends in with phrases like “community service”. Being on the dole automatically makes you “dishonest”.

Essentially, the underlying message is about blaming the poor for their own predicament, the ideology of the culture of dependency, rights and responsibilities, worshipping the private sector and profit. Oh, and what will Purnell’s response be when 2 million people end up on the dole by Xmas…?

So here’s your chance to tell the DWP what you think of this draconian and punitive Green Paper. And tell James Purnell where to shove it!

I've just attempted their online consultation paper. It is horrendously difficult. They should use those things as entrance exams to Oxbridge!
