the Camp for Climate Action is completely legal.

Legal Information about coming to the Camp

Attending the Camp for Climate Action is completely legal. But that
doesn’t mean that you won’t encounter the police. We’ve set out below what
those encounters might be like so that you will have a better idea of what
to expect.

Arriving at the Camp
As you arrive it’s likely you will see lots of police at the stations near
to Heathrow as well as outside the Camp itself. They are very likely to be
taking photographs and filming anyone they think might be coming to the
Camp. They may also be stopping and searching people (for more info see
below). Whilst this is very intrusive, and even intimidating, it is
unfortunately usual police practice for this type of event.

Do they have the right to take my photograph?
Yes, they can take photographs and film you. This is a police information
gathering technique. The good news is that you don’t need to co-operate
with it, you can look away or hurry past.

Do I need to give my name and address to the police?
No, unless you are the driver of a vehicle or engaged in anti social
behaviour. The police frequently ask for names and addresses and even
imply that you are obliged to give this info, but you are not.

What happens if I am stopped and searched?
The police have various powers to stop and search you, which include
powers under the Terrorism Act. It’s an offence to refuse. If you are
stopped and searched the police may ask you to remove your outer clothing
(hat, coat), they will pat you down, check your pockets and your bags.
They will also search vehicles. They have the right to confiscate various
items, so consider what you are bringing to the Camp. They could seize
items that they believe might be used as weapons, drugs, or that could be
used in connection with terrorism (eg cameras, computers and address
books). You should be given a form explaining why you were stopped and
searched. Remember you do not need to give your name and address.

What if I’m thinking of taking direct action?
Great! Seethe Climate Camp ‘bust card’(attached) for a brief guide to your
rights on arrest. For more detailed information see Know Your Rights
http://www.networkforclimateaction.org.uk/toolkit/action_resources/legal_resources/legalguide_climateaction-england_wales.pdf.

Where can I get more information?
There will be a legal support team at the Camp so if you need advice
contact them. You might also find it useful to read Know Your Rights .

To make your experience of dealing with the police more empowering (and
more fun) take part in the Climate Camp Stop and Search I-Spy game
. There are some great prizes to be won!
